What they need
A relationship that does not infringe on your independence is essential. A relationship where you are checked daily on where you are, have to explain why you did not get in touch, or have to coordinate plans in advance, quickly feels suffocating. A partner who respects each other's space, who can move naturally between being together and being apart, fits you. Your ideal is a relationship where you choose each other without depending on each other.
What to mind in the relationship
To a partner: you need to practice expressing in words that your nonchalance is not indifference. You have to consciously send small signals so the other person can feel “I am here.” Also, build the habit of asking what the other person wants in the relationship. Checking first, before expectations collide, is the most effective way to prevent a relationship that ends ambiguously later.
What triggers the guard
Inner resistance arises in situations where your independence is infringed or you are forced to change your pace. A distancing reaction happens when a partner repeats excessive emotional reassurance, or when demands like “why do you not express yourself more actively” pile up.
What brings them back
Given enough time alone, you recover naturally. When no one rushes you, you return faster. After recovery, you begin reconnection by approaching comfortably, as if nothing had happened.
