I Think Too Much — Is That a Flaw?

Rewriting a single message several times isn't a flaw. A look at re-seeing "thinking a lot" as thoughtfulness, and telling it apart from draining rumination.

Rewriting even a simple message several times before sending, and at night replaying a conversation that's already over, mulling over "I should have said it like this." Sometimes you feel stuck with yourself: "Why do I think so much?"

But thinking a lot, put another way, means you weigh things deeply and look carefully. That's a clear texture, and used well, it becomes a real strength.

Thinking a lot is 'thoughtfulness'

Picturing several scenarios before deciding, considering the other person's position two or three times, preparing in advance for what might happen — this is how a considerate, responsible person thinks.

People who think deeply make fewer mistakes and catch details others miss. They also give the people around them the trust of feeling, "This person really thinks deeply about me."

The problem isn't 'thinking' — it's 'circling the same spot'

What wears you out isn't the thinking itself; it's when that thinking spins in the same place with no conclusion.

Thinking that adds a new perspective and moves you forward is a source of strength, but thinking that replays a past event the same way only frays your mind. The two look alike, but their directions are exact opposites.

So what you need isn't "stop thinking," but an eye that tells apart thinking that moves forward from thinking that circles. The moment you notice you're circling, you can step out a little.

Knowing the texture of your thinking tires you less

When you know which situations make you think especially deeply, and which moments tip you into rumination, you can keep that thoughtfulness as a strength and not let it leak away as drain.

  • Tell apart things that deserve deep thought from things to just let pass
  • Decide for yourself the point where "I've thought about it enough"
  • When you start circling, move your body to change the room your thoughts are in
